Although it began as a comics convention, the world’s largest geek-culture festival is now known for its celebrity visits, exclusive previews, and stunning fan costumes and cosplay. Each year, guests try to outdo each other with ever more extravagant, outlandish, humorous, and odd costumes, leaving the rest of us speechless in admiration and confusion. Is this Pikachu, or something else? Is this some sort of Street Fighter? Whatever it is seems to be working. However, we’d like to know what the deal is with strange mashup cosplays. Are they smart wordplay that we’re missing? Are they just… haphazard? It’s not that we don’t value the effort that goes into them; we just want to know what motivates individuals to say, “You know what would be great? If Pikachu were a character in Street Fighter.
