When love came into the picture, a lot of things changed. People began to question the idea that marriage was based on. For the first time, roles were changed, and women had a lot to say about it. So, women started to exist not just to serve men, but also to work together in a way that didn’t favour either party. But the idea that a man “owned” his wife was still widely accepted while America was still being made. When two people get married, the wife usually drops her last name. Because the rule was so strict, a woman lost her citizenship if she married a foreigner.
A Vote for Women
Women were given the right to vote in 1920. Many things changed after that. Two family members all of a sudden had dual citizenship. Even though the spouse was still in charge of the family. After that, people of different races could marry legally in 1960. You might be surprised to find out that rape in a marriage wasn’t recognised as a crime until 1970. Stephanie Coontz, a historian, says that the idea that marriage is a private connection for the happiness of two people is very new.
