These Breathtaking Images Really Do Justice to The Burning Man Festival

Storms of Dust

Because of the festival’s location in the desert, many attendees bring supplies to protect themselves from the inevitable dust storms that will occur. These include items like goggles, bandanas, and masks. These dust storms can be exceedingly severe, and in some cases even dangerous, as they can restrict vision to just a few feet.

Unanticipated opulence

Despite the low-key nature of the festival, it attracts a largely affluent population. About seventy-nine percent were Caucasian, and their typical annual income was well over $94,000—more than double the average for the county. Luxuries are brought to Burning Man by the elite who invade the festival. The ultra-wealthy who attend the festival often hire their own private planes or helicopters to get there. A week before the event begins, volunteers slap together an airport on a sandy road and call it Black Rock City.
