Civic Duty
When planning gatherings, the good of the community must come first. In accordance with this guiding philosophy, all applicable federal, state, and local statutes must be followed at all times. It’s a set of rules designed to make sure everyone stays safe. Live performances and other public gatherings are subject to the principle of Civic Responsibility. The Burning Man community expects all participants to behave responsibly at all times.
Preserving Discretion and Leaving No Sign
The Leaving No Trace ethos emphasises environmental responsibility and post-event cleanliness. The dried-up lake bed should ideally be left in better condition than it was found. The tenet of ‘leaving no trace’ is shown using satellite imagery. You can observe the entire process, from setting up this temporary city to taking it down again, all within two weeks, as home to this thriving community of 80,000 campers. A time-lapse photograph taken at this year’s Burning Man festival reveals the desert’s transformation into a thriving metropolis and its subsequent return to dust and barrenness.
