Frederick Douglass and Helen Pitts’s Troubles: A Firestorm
The romance between Frederick Douglass and Helen Pitts dates all the way back to the 1800s. Back then, the two didn’t seem like a good match because they both had quite different upbringings and appearances. They met because Helen, his companion, was a suffragist author who worked in Douglass’ office. Talk about pure love—she even assisted him in publishing his own book! Although Douglass’ family was unable to embrace their love, they were at least able to find comfort in their closest friends. They remained together until Douglass’s death for at least 11 years.
