Difficult Beginnings
It was no secret that Marilyn had a rocky upbringing. She was an orphan who, upon reaching celebrity status, confessed that she had spent her childhood locked up. Fans assumed an aunt and uncle raised her because of this. However, that’s only half the truth. Marilyn’s housing arrangements were often shifting, with her spending time both at Gladys’ and elsewhere. She spent some time in foster care, although Grace Goddard’s house was always her primary residence. After Gladys was admitted to a mental health facility, she remained there for quite some time.
Time Passes
Six years had passed during Gladys’s time at the university. That allowed her plenty of time to not just wonder what Marilyn was up to in the big wide world by herself, but to also consider her own life and the decisions she had made. On Marilyn’s birth certificate, Gladys falsely claimed that she was her first child. Her daughter with ex-husband Jasper, Berniece Baker Miracle, was born in 1919. Since she had abandoned Berniece and Jasper and her son Jackie, she was no longer with them.
