The burns Margaret Hamilton sustained were of the second degree.
Margaret Hamilton’s portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz is one of the most famous in cinema history; she is sassy, green, and a little terrifying, yet she knows how to leave with a red spark and some smoke. One of the flares intended to signal the witch’s departure reacted badly to the petroleum in her green makeup, much to Hamilton’s dismay. As a result, a fire broke out, and Hamilton suffered second-and third-degree burns to her hands and face. So much for her melting by water being poured in her face.
