Amazing pictures from the past that show how life used to be

In the 1940s, there was a lack of nylon stockings

In the 20th century, as women’s skirt lengths got longer, so did the need for stockings. Most stockings in the 1920s and 1930s were made of silk or rayon. But by the beginning of the 1940s, nylon stockings were more popular. When the U.S. joined the Second World War, nylon production was diverted to the military. This made nylon stockings hard to find. As a solution, these women had their legs painted to look like they were wearing stockings. This was a common practise even after the war ended.

Change rooms on wheels, 1938

On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than a nice swim at the beach. This is also a time when beaches tend to be very crowded. Most likely, the changing rooms are too crowded, and the ones that aren’t may be too far away. Portable changing booths seem to be the answer for these two women at Coney Island in New York City. These portable changing booths are easy to set up and don’t weigh much. This means that anyone can use them to change clothes anywhere while keeping some privacy.
