Amazing pictures from the past that show how life used to be

London fire fighters who were women in 1926

The person in the picture is not a Roman soldier, but a member of the Achille Serre Ladies Brigade in action. Achille Serre was a Frenchman who moved to England in 1870 with his wife Eugenie. He was the first person in the UK to use the “dry cleaning” method. At its peak, Serre’s dry cleaning business, had more than 1,700 employees and more than 400 locations all over the UK. Even the fire brigade at the company was mostly made up of women.

A Whole House Move in San Francisco

In this picture, a whole house is being moved. This was a fairly common thing to do in the United States from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Some families did this because they didn’t have enough money to build a new home where they moved to. At the time, life was hard for many people, even in big cities like San Francisco. People often moved from one city or state to another in search of a better life when crops failed, there was famine, taxes were too high, or there were not enough jobs.
