Atari held the first video game tournament

Since the first consumer video game, Computer Space, came out in the early 1970s, video games have changed a lot. What used to be a niche hobby is now a very profitable business that brings in well over $100 billion each year. In 1980, the Space Invaders Championship was the first big video game tournament. It was put on by the American company Atari, Inc. Over 10,000 people from all over the United States signed up for the tournament, which helped bring competitive gaming into the mainstream.
