Amazing pictures from the past that show how life used to be

How the tunnels in New York City were watched

Before traffic cameras were common, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) patrolled New York City’s tunnels with small cars called “catwalk cars.” This is a picture of a catwalk car in the Lincoln Tunnel, which connects Midtown Manhattan to New Jersey. The catwalk cars had their own track and could go up to 35 miles per hour. The first time these quick little cars were used was in 1955, and they stopped being used in 2011. At that time, most catwalk cars were being used for maintenance.

The jukebox

A device called a “boombox” was made by companies like General Electric, Marantz, Panasonic, and Sony for many years before Apple released the iPod in the early 2000s. The transistorised portable music players had big speakers and an amplifier that sent the sound out. When it came out in the 1970s, the boombox quickly became a symbol of urban life in the United States, especially among young African American and Hispanic people in big cities like New York and Los Angeles. The boombox was also a big part of hip hop culture and helped hip hop music become popular.
