Christian Bale is all about method acting, therefore he goes all-in to alter for a part. Bale put on 42 pounds and chopped off a portion of his hair for his role as con artist Irving Rosenfeld in the film American Hustle. Because Bale gave the character a slouched posture, he herniated a disc in his back. He lost about three inches of height due to this. His makeover was so drastic that not even Robert De Niro recognised him at first.
