A Couple Converted a School Bus Into a DIY Home

Flooring Replacement

“Things are getting real up in here,” Tawny said at this point in the transformation. “Appliances are here.” The proprietors of the skoolie discovered a low-cost stove/oven and Dometic fridge/freezer combo that will “operate on solar when parked and propane while driving.” The homeowners had also finished constructing the walls and installed the new flooring at this stage. They chose greyish laminate boards that were both durable and beautiful. They began framing internal walls after the last floor layer was installed. Let’s take a deeper look at what’s going on behind the scenes.

Bathroom and Hallway Framing

The beginnings of the bathroom, hallway, and bedroom walls are shown below. The engine is similarly located in the rear of the bus. While some skoolie owners chose to separate the back engine from the rest of the bedroom, Tawny and Mike had a different plan. To keep access to the large window in the back, the pair opted to convert the space above the engine into a seat. “We’ll reupholster the engine to make a reading nook, an extension of the bed that I’m sure will receive more use than the bed itself,” Tawny explained.
