A Couple Converted a School Bus Into a DIY Home

The Deconstruction

Mike and Tawny chose to convert a school bus into a small home instead of purchasing an RV or a tiny house on wheels for a variety of reasons. To begin with, purchasing a bus allowed the couple to completely customize their future home. They also believed that driving a skoolie would be simpler. Tawny and Mike had to dismantle the existing inside before they could start building their dream home. The old seats, walls, and even the floor had to be removed. They intended to do everything themselves – a total do-it-yourself project for unskilled builders.

A New Beginning

It took the DIYers around two days to remove the vehicle’s 20-something passenger seats. They next removed the original metal flooring and subfloor, only to discover a plethora of rust beneath. Tawny and Mike taped out their floor plan before getting started on patching up the skoolie. Although the bus was only 250 square feet, the couple’s design allowed them to incorporate almost all of their regular household amenities. When they were finished, the skoolie would have a living room, a kitchen, a fully-equipped bathroom, and a large bedroom.
