A Couple Converted a School Bus Into a DIY Home

The Enchanted Bedroom

The travel mates’ bedroom turned out to be a completely lovely and warm retreat. Mike and Tawny converted the space around the back engine into a window seat just as planned. They created a hideaway with spectacular views by adding a couch cushion and some throw pillows. The back window is “the most awesome [one] in the house,” according to Tawny, so it’s a good thing the DIYers didn’t cover it up! Underneath the platform bed are the enormous drawers that hold the majority of the couple’s clothes, as well as extra storage for camping gear and winter necessities.

Extra Bedroom Space

Many skoolie conversions have a bedroom that is just large enough to fit a bed, but not this one. Tawny and Mike had some walking space in the room, as well as an open closet, in addition to a conventional queen-size mattress. Instead of hangers, which would take up additional room, the exposed storage space has a copper bar with hooks/clips. “[The bedroom] is rather large by schoolhouse standards because we spend a lot of time back here,” Tawny remarked. Because Mike and Tawny split custody of Tawny’s two children, the teens take over the front half of the bus, and Mike and Tawny work in the bedroom when the entire crew is present.
